Why Mauni Amavasya Should be Observed?

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, an individual has three types of impurities in him. They are ignorance, emotion and action. In 2013, Mauni Amavasya date is February 10.

It is largely considered auspicious to wash off these mistakes or impurities by having a dip at the Sangam of Triveni in the holy city. If a person is unable to reach the sangam then having a dip in the nearest river or pond is enough on this particular day.

It is to be noted that most of the devotees have a dip or bath at Triveni of Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. They wash oneself in river water with lot of commitment and devotion. In this manner, a person’s impurities and dirt is washed away. Then the person’s soul is regarded as purified. It is to be remembered that a person observes Maun vrat after having a dip or bath. During the observation of Maun Vrat, a person should visit holy places and perform meditation in a peaceful manner. This largely helps in keeping the mind in control and purifies it too. It is strongly believed that the person’s soul gets directly connected with God and Goddesses.

An individual can perform Hawan and donations on the day of Mauni Amawasya after, having a dip or bath and observing meditations. It is believed that all the sins are removed by this act. Devotees also believe that hundred thousand Rajasuya Yagya is equivalent by having a bath or dip in Triveni on the day of Mauni Amavasya. It is believed that Ashvamedha Yagya is equal to this act.
