Who is Lord Shani dev?

The popular mantra of Lord Shani Dev is Om Sham Shanaishcharaye Namah. The Lord’s consort is Nīladēvī. The mount used by him is Raven, Vulture and Crow.

Shani is one of the Jyotiṣa or Navagraha. In Hindu astrology, the nine primary celestial beings is this particular Lord. In the planet Saturn, Shani is embodied. He is also regarded as the Lord of Saturday. It is to be remembered that Shani is also locally known as Śanaiścara. In most Indian languages, the word shani denotes Saturday or the seventh day. On the other hand the word Shani largely comes from Śanayē Kramati Saḥ which directly means as one who moves verly slowly. It is to be observed that in order to revolve around the sun, planet Saturn normally takes about 30 years.

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, Shani is the son of Lord Surya and his second wife Chhaya. Therefore Shani is also known as Chayyaputra. It is to be noted that he is the elder brother of Lord Yama who is regarded as the god of death. Yama is considered as the deliverance of justice. A leading acharay said, “Shani gives us the results of one’s deeds through one’s life through appropriate punishments and rewards; Yama grants the results of one’s deeds after death.”

He further stated, “When Shani opened his eyes as a baby for the very first time, the sun went into an eclipse, which clearly denotes the impact of Shani on astrological charts. He is known as the greatest teacher and well wisher for the righteous as well the greatest punisher for those who follow the path of evil, betrayal, backstabbing and unjust revenge. He is depicted dark in colour, clothed in black; holding a sword, arrows and two daggers and mounted on a crow, which is Shani’s vāhana. As protector of property, Shani is able to repress the thieving tendencies of birds.”
