What is Mahalaya Amavasya?

According to the Hindu religious texts and inscriptions, the new moon day, is largely considered by the Hindu religious scholars and pundits for performing ceremonies and rites as the most important day in the year.

The day falls as the last day of the fortnight. This particular day is sacred for directly offering all types of oblations to departed ancestors.

It is to be remembered that Mahalaya Paksha is the dark fortnight that happens during the period September-October in the given year. Hindus wholeheartedly consider the day of Mahalaya Amavasya with great importance and significance. With prayers for peace, this day is regarded as the annual festival in a year for propitiating the spirits of ancestors. It is to be remembered that for the propitiation of such departed spirits, the fortnight that preceding the new moon is consecrated specially by all Hindus.

Gaya is a holy place according to Hindu religion. All those ceremonies that are performed in respectful honour of ancestors is considered to be largely equal to those performed at the river beds of Gaya during each day of this fortnight. The main aim of performing all such rites, rituals and prayer is to worship the departed soul in order to give permanent satisfaction of their desires and wishes. By doing these the ancestors might be in peace and happiness during the rest of the year ahead.

It is the duty of each and every individual who follow Hinduism to perform these rites, rituals and prayer wholeheartedly for pleasing their ancestors and get self satisfaction of doing their individual responsibility and duties towards them.
