Vishwakarma Puja also known as Biswakarma Jayanti is celebrated every year on the 17th of September in Bengal, Orissa, Jharkhand, Assam, Tripura and other parts of Eastern India. It is dedicated to Vishwakarma who is the divine architect , designer and craftsman of construction as per Hindu belief.
The unique thing about this festival is that it comes on the same date every year unlike traditional indian festivals which vary every year. This is because Vishwakarma Puja day is calculated based on the transit of the sun. The same theory is followed in celebrating New Year and Pongal in Tamil Nadu and Vishu in Kerala.
On the day of Vishwakarma Puja, factories and industries are cleaned and the machinery and tools are worshipped. It is to commemorate the job of Vishwakarma as the architect who is credited to have built the entire universe. It is said that the holy city of Dwarka, Maya Sabha of Pandavas , Lanka of Ravana was also built by this architect. This day is also known as the Kanya Sankranti day in some parts of India.
In some parts of India, Vishwakarma Puja is also celebrated during Diwali. This would fall on the fourth day of Diwali and in the year 2012, it is celebrated on the 14th of November 2012.
