Tirukannapuram Temple, Sowriraja Perumal Temple in Nagapattinam district

Sri Sowriraja Perumal temple is located in Tirukannapuram, in the district of Nagapattinam, in the state of Tamil Nadu in South India. The principal deities of this temple are Neelamega Perumal and Sowriraja Perumal. The mother Goddesses of this temple is Kannapura Nayaki.

The holy Theertham is Nitya Pushkarini and the Agamam or Pooja is known as Vaikanasam.

The temple is nearly 1000-2000 years old. According to the local legends, the historical name of this temple location was known as Krishnapuram.

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, in Mangala Sasanam hymns, Kulasekhara Azhwar, Sri Andal and Tirumangai Azhwar had praised the Lord.

The important festivals of this temple are Tamil and English New Year days marked with special puja and rituals. On the 10th day of Masi full moon-poornima day in February-March 13 day Masi Magam Utsav-with Theerthavari in the sea, on Poornima Anusha star day Vaikasi Brahmmotsav is held. On the second day of Amavasya-new moon day in Margazhi covering December-January, 10 day, day festival (Pagal Pathu in Tamil) begins with Lord’s procession. With special pujas to Lord, Deepavali and Makar Sankranthi are also observed in the temple as festival days.

The other important festivals are Panguni Uthiram in March-April, Tirukarthikai in November-December, Tiruvadipooram in July-August, Chitra poornima in April-May, Navarathri in September-October, Ekadasi the 11th day of new moon or full moon days and Vaikunda Ekadasi day. The temple is largely known for special homams conducted during the purnima and Amavasya days according to the Hindu religious calendar.
