Sri Arumkarai Amman Temple, Peria Tirumangalam, Periamangalam 

Amman is praised by the villagers as Nalla Thai-Good Mother. There is no sanctorum as such or Vimana and tower in the temple. The place wherein the box is kept is revered as Ambal. There are guardian deities as Natrayar, Ladamuni, Madurai Veeran, Karuppusami, Mahamuni and Lord Vinayaka with planets Rahu and Ketu. No abishek is performed to Lord Vinayaka and other deities. The Balipeeta at the entrance of the temple is designed as tortoise.

People pray for family welfare and good farm yields.

Devotees sacrifice goats for the guardian deities, place dolls of horses and arrange feeding.

The traditional Prasad offered in Shakti temples as turmeric and kumkum are not offered in the temple, but the ashes from the oven used for cooking the nivedhana is offered. It is believed that this ash contains medicinal properties. Amaravathi River turns here as a garland offered to Amman. Amman was called ‘Nalla Thai – Good Mother – in the past. As She is installed near the river, She was also known as Arumkarai Amman – Amman on the banks of the river- and in the days followed this came to stay.

Opening Timings

The temple is open from 6.00 a.m. to 10.00 a.m. and from 5.00 p.m. to 8.00 p.m.

  • It is said that festival in the temple was celebrated only once in 100 years. This was called “Perootta Vizha”. Only during this festival, the box with the idol of Amman was taken in procession in this village. The festival is not continued as no permission was granted by Amman for some centuries. However, in the month of Thai-January-February, Pongal gifts are offered to Amman from the nearby Natrayar temple.
