Significance of midnight pooja during Shivaratri

Shivaratri is celebrated across the country on the night before amavasya during the Phalguna masa which comes during February and March. You might be wondering why it is mainly done during night unlike other pujas. Let us explore why Shivaratri midnight puja is so important.

The reason behind doing puja in the night during Shivaratri can be attributed to the appearance of Shiva at midnight on the day before amavasya. It is said that he appeared just before the beginning of Kaliyuga to eradicate evil and ignorance in the world. The dark night of amavasya is symbolic of evil and ignorance here.

Another theory says that it was on that day that Shiva appeared for the first time in the form of a Linga and hence Shivaratri is celebrated. Whatever be the reason, it helps us to keep awake for a night doing puja to purify our mind and soul.
