Shanta Durga Temple, Panaji: Purnima Puja

Shanta Durga Temple is located at the foothill of Kavalem village in Ponda Taluka, in the district of Panaji, in the state of Goa, India. It is 33 km (21 mi) from Panaji. The temple has a large temple complex with attractive and beautiful architectural images and idols.

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, a small laterite mud shrine was initially built and the deity was successfully installed. Later during 173o, the foundation stone was laid and was completed in 1738 and later renovated in 1966.

The primary deity of this temple is Shantadurga. The main festival conducted Durga Puja. It is to be noted that the temple has a fusion of Indo-Portuguese architecture. It has the ‘Sabhamandap’ (the main hall), balustraded flat dome, pyramidical shape ‘shikaras’ rising on the roofs of the facade (entrance hall) etc. In this temple, Shantadurga, the goddess is placed and mediates between Vishnu and Shiva.

The Goddess is locally called as ‘Santeri’ and Shree Shantadurga Devi. A devotee who prays to the Goddess gets blessed with job opportunities and children. A large number of devotees pray to this Lord for the removal of obstacles marriage affairs, to education, etc.

The temple is kept open for devotees from the early morning hours to mid noon and later in the evening hours to dusk. Devotees from nook and corner of the state and neighboring state of Karnataka and Maharashtra visit this temple on all auspicious days and religiously festive days with great devotion and dedication.
