The Mahalaya Amavasya (Maha means Large; Laya means destruction) is considered to be performed during the Lunar period that occurs between September – October.

It is believed that there was an occasion in the Hindu mythology that a fierce war took place between the Gods and Demons in which large number of people from both the sides have attained death, this war was held during the Bhadrapada Bahula Paadayami to Amavasya. This period is also called as “Sasthrahatha Mahalaya” and those Gods and Demons are considered to be our fore-fathers and the ritual performed during this period is termed as very auspicious and sacred.

According to Hinduism in Puranas, one month of human being’s life on earth is equally equivalent to 1 day of Pitru Devathas of which Shukla Paksha (waxing moon days) 15 days is the day time and Krishna Paksha (waning moon days) 15 days night time for the Pitrus. As per Hindu dharma, four sacred slokas are into existence which says “Mathru Devo Bhava, “Pithru Devo Bhava”, “Acharya Devo Bhava” and “Athithi Devo Bhava” that means Mother, Father, Teacher and Guest are equivalent to God, serving them is equal to serving the God himself.
