Vasant Panchami is a holy festival celebrated among all Indians.
Vasant Panchami is also known as Shri Panchami and Saraswati Panchami.
On Vasant Panchami, people worship Godess Saraswati. The Goddess Saraswathi is considered as the God of knowledge, music, arts, science and technology.
According to our mythology, the day is connected with poet Kalidasa.
When Kalidasa went to commit suicide in river Saraswathi, Godess Saraswati emerged from the waters and asked him to take a dip there.
After taking a dip in the holy waters, Kalidasa became knowledgeable and began writing poetry. Thus the Vasant Panchami is celebrated to venerate Goddess Saraswati, the goddess of education and learning.
In recent times, the festival Vasant Panchami is celebrated by farmers as the on-coming of the spring season.
The day is largely celebrated in Northern Parts of India. Here, people offer food to the Brahmins and organize rituals in the name of Goddess Saraswati.
As per Indian Tradition, on this day children are taught to write their first words and the occasion is termed as “Akshara Abhayasam” which means learning the letters.
Vasant Panchami is celebrated on the day when Panchami Tithi prevails during Purvahna Kaal. Many astrologers consider Vasant Panchami as a day which is auspicious to start all good work.
Although there is no special time to perform Saraswati Puja on Vasant Panchami day, Priests say that the whole Vasant Panchami day is auspicious to perform the Saraswati Puja and it important to make sure that the Puja is done when Panchami Tithi is prevailing.
Many times Panchami Tithi doesn’t prevail whole of the day on Vasant Panchami day hence it is believed that it is important to do Saraswati puja within Panchami Tithi.
