Makara Sankranthi is an Indian festival celebrated on the occasion of “Makara Sankramanam”Makara Sankranam means, on this day the sun will enter in to Makara Rashi. This is considered as a holy occasion by Indians as the Hindu calender flips to Uttarayanam, the second half of Hindu year.

14 January 2016 – Bhogi

15 January 2016 – Makara Sankranti

16 January 2016 – Kanuma

17 January 2016 – Mukkanuma

In Andhra Pradesh it is known as Sankranthi, in Tamil Nadu it is known as Pongal, in Punjab it is known as Lohri, and in Assam it is known as Magh Bihu.

Sankranthi is a celebrated for four days as a festival in South India.

On the first day, Bhogi festival is observed and on the second day, it is the most important day and is known as Sankranthi or Pongal. The third day of the festival is Kanuma and the fourth and final day is referred as Mukkanuma.

This festival generally occurs in Uttarayana Punnyakalam period begins with Sankranthi and the next six months are considered as auspicious one.
