Parsva Ekadasi

According to the Hindu religious calendar, Parsva Ekadasi is observed when the Moon is waxing in the month of Asvina. This particular Ekadashi is also regionally known as Vamana Ekadasi. The illimatable and legendary glories of this special day is largely discussed in the Brahma-vaivarta Purana by Lord Krishna and Maharaja Yudhistira. Lord Krishna mentioned to him to observe this particular Ekadashi for reviving one’s desire and obtain liberation. In certain regions of India, this Ekadashi is known as Parsva Parivartini Ekadasi (“changing sides”) because Lord appears as Vamana deva at this time so called also as Vamana Ekadasi.

As per Lord Krishna, Vamana deva is considered as the Supreme Personality of Godhead. The Lord mentioned the story of Bali Maharaj to Yudhistira. Bali was a devotee in the time of Treta-Yuga. Bali with his devotional and dedicated prayers defeated Lord Indra and successfully conquered heavenly planets after winning over the King of Heaven. According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, the supreme lord sleeps for a long stretch that is for four months which begins from Sayana Ekadashi to Utthana Ekadashi. Therefore, all the Hindu devotees should offer special type of worship to the said Lord with selfish motivation. As per the Hindu religious literature and sculpture, “devotees should properly observe each and every Ekadasi and by observance in this way one obtains the result of performing one thousand horse sacrifices.”

Devotees visit the nearest temple on the religious important day of Parsva Ekadashi with great devotion and dedication. They wholeheartedly participate in all the religious activities and functions that mark this special day with family members, relatives and friends. Special rituals and traditional pujas are offered to the Lord in the temples and devotees attain blessings. Fasting is observed as per the ancient Hindu religious tradition in a strict manner.
