Mattu Pongal in Tamil Nadu is dedicated to the cattle and is celebrated on the third day of Pongal. On this day people offer prayers to the bulls , cows and other farm animals. Mattu in tamil means cattle and Pongal means the sweet dish prepared out of rice and sugar.

On Mattu Pongal day, the cattle are given a good wash and their horns are painted colourfully and they are decorated with flowers. People worship them and feed them with Pongal and perform the arati of the cattle. In some parts they also organise the festival of Jallikattu in which young men try to catch the running bull.
