Legend of Shami Puja : Pandava’s Story

Shami Puja is one of the most important rituals during Navaratri, especially on the day of Mahanavami. This happens to be the ninth day of Navratri and is also celebrated as Ayudha Puja across the country by the devotees. The ritual involves the worshipping of all the household equipment and office machinaries and vehicles as a mark of expressing our gratitude towards their service. There is an interesting legend behind why the Shami Tree assumed such importance with the ayudha puja.

Legend of Shami Puja : Pandavas in Mahabharata

The Story dates back to the age of the Mahabharata. In Mahabharata, the Pandavas ( Yudhistra, Bheema, Arjuna, Nakul and Sahadeva) lose a game of gambling with the Kauravas and had a pay a heavy price for that by going to exile for many years. When they started their exile, they could not carry their weapons along with them and needed to hide them in a secure place. It was then that the Shami Tree was chosen for this task and they hid all their weapons under the Shami tree and prayed for its safe keeping. After they completed their exile period, they came back after many years and found all their weapons under the Shami Tree still intact. It was the ninth day of navratri . In order to express their gratitude for the Shami tree , they performed the Shami puja on that day.

From that day onwards, Shami Puja became the norm during Navratri and even today, people worship the Shami tree on the day of Ayudha Puja. People exchange shami leaves as a custom among friends and relatives on that day.
