Irumbai Shiva Temple, Pondicherry

Irumbai Shiva Temple is located in the village named Irumbai Maakaalam in the state of Pondicherry. The principal deity of this temple is Lord Shiva in the form of Maakaaleswarar and the mother Goddess is Kuyilmozhi Ammai.

The other shrines in this temple belong to Sambandar and Lord Subramanyar. This temple is regarded as the very ancient Shiva temple in south India. It is also considered as one of the 275 Thevara Padal Petra Sthalangals. It is situated near the popular Auroville International Township. It is just a kilometer away from Morattandi enroute to Tindivanam.

The temple tank in front of the temple is regarded very sacred. All the devotees have a bath or dip in the early morning before visiting this particular temple. The temple is located among the lush greenery with coconut trees and banyan trees. Nice flooring and beautiful paintings are the main attraction of this temple. The painting has Tanjore and Kerala styles in it.

The important festivals that are celebrated in this temple are the annual Kumbabhisheham during Tamil month of Thai, all the days of Amavasya and purnima, Tamil New Year day, Deepavalli, Pongal, Shivarathri, etc. This temple has religious and social significance in this region.

The important highlight of this temple are that it is one of the Thevara Padal Petra Sthalams, the temple was in a dilapidated condition but now beautifully renovated with beautiful and rich paintings. The shiva lingam is seen in a broken form but tightly tied together with a copper string.
