International Kite festival during Uttarayan in Gujarat

Makar Sankranti is celebrated as Uttarayan in Gujarat. This festival is dedicated to the Sun god and is a grand celebration for the Hindu community. In Gujarat, during Uttarayan, the International Kite Festival is organised every year on this day to mark the celebrations. The sky is filled with Kites of differenct sizes, shape and colours.

The International Kite Festival is organised by the Gujarat Tourism Development Corporation every year in Ahmedabad since the year 1989. The local stadium becomes the venue for the festival and kite enthusiasts from across the world come here to showcase their talent. The show runs throughout the day and even during night you can see the illuminated kites called tukals flying in the sky.

During the Gujarat International Kite Festival in Ahmedabad you can find the best variety of kites in the Patang Bazaar area. Also kite makers from across the world come here and make giant banner kites . The Japanese rokkaku fighting kites, flying dragons from China, italian Sculptural kites are some of the popular kites from outside India. Equally matching them in the contest, the local Rasulbhai Rahimbhai of Ahmedabad is one of the famous kite makers who makes around 500 kites on a single string and is a major attraction here in the festival.

Apart from this, during Uttarayan in Gujarat, people also make special sweets and distribute it among friends and family to celebrate the festival. Also the young ones in the family gather on the rooftops to fly their kites and enjoy the occasion.
