In northern India, Hariyali Amavasya is largely observed as Amavasya Tithi during holy month Sawan or Sharvana as per the Hindu traditional calendar.

This particular day is considered by the Hindus as highly auspicious. It is to be highly noted that Hariyali Amavasya falls just three days before popular Hariyali Teej. On Hariyali Amavasya day, North Indian Hindu temples organize special Darshan especially in Vrindavan and Mathura. The main temples are Banke Bhihari temple in Vrindavan and Dwarkadhish temple in Mathura. These temples are flocked by thousands of Krishna devotees who visit to have special Darshan of Lord Krishna.

It is to be remembered that the world famous among Krishna devotees is Phool Bangla at Banke Bihari temple in Vrindavan. On Hariyali Amavasya day, special Shiva Darshan is also arranged in various Shiva temples in these regions.

It is to be noted that in south India, Lunar Calendar is followed to mark Amavasya and other Hindu festivals. On the other hand, Hariyali Amavasya falls during Shravana month according to the North India traditional Hindu calendar. In Gujarat, Hariyali Amavasya is also known as Hariyali Amas or Haryali Amavas .

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, Amavasya means in Sanskrit language as ‘living near’ ( ama = near, vasya = living ). This day is very close to the heart for Hindus. They have a holy dip or bath in the sacred river. They observe Maun Vrat and many other types of religious Vrats. They also perform rituals and prayer to God and goddesses in order to get blessed.
