Dashain Celebrations in Nepal

Dashain is clearly the biggest, longest and the most auspicious festival celebrated by the Nepalese of all caste and creed throughout the country. Goddess Durga is worshipped in all her manifestations during the 15 day long festival with ritualistic pujas, abundant offerings and thousands of animal sacrifices.

The festival is known for emphasis on family gatherings as well as a renewal of community ties. The Nepal Government closes for about 7 days during this festival.

Flying kites is an important part of celebrations and people of all ages, especially children enjoy it the most. Colourful kites of different shapes and sizes can be seen on the skies of Nepal during this period. Also the elders resort to gambling as a ritual during this period . Even though it is illegal throughout the year, it is permitted in public places only during this period. People buy new clothes and gift them to family members.

The bamboo swings which are constructed in many parts of the country are a major attraction which is called “Ping” in Nepali. They are constructed with ropes made of tough grass and bamboo sticks. They are usually built a week before the festival and dismantled only after the festival ends. Also many fairs are organised during this period and people from nearby places flock those fairs during this period.

Animal sacrifice is an important ritual among Nepalese and literally thousands of animals are sacrificed and offered to the Goddess during this period. However of late , many organisations are raising their voice against the practice and suggesting more noble ways of celebrating the festival.
