Bodhayana Darsa Tharpana –Amavasya day

According to the Hindu religious scholars and pundits, Bodhayana was the son of popular sage Kanva. He was a great saint. He is known among the Hindu religious followers as the author of Grihya Suthras that is dedicatedly followed by Iyer Brahmins.

This saint belonged to the respectful Krishna Yajur Veda. It is to be remembered that those who largely follow with dedication and commitment Bodhayana Sutra perform Amavasya Tharpanam according to the Bodhayana Amavasya days. They follow the pangam for the performance of Amavasya prayers and rituals.

According to the local legends, “If on Chathurdasi day, Amavasya Thithi starts before 12 hours (30 Nazhigai) from Sun rise, then those who follow Bodhayana Sutra do Tharpana on that day. They also perform Tharpana on Chathurdasi day when, the Prathama Thithi next to Amavasya day ends within 12 hours after sun rise.”

It is to be remembered that this particular Amavasya day is directly connected to the artificial Amavasya story related to Mahabharata. Pandavas along with Lord Krishna performed Tharpanam before the beginning of the war in order to make the Kauravas started the said war in an inauspicious day and time.

According to the Bodhayana Suthra, they follow a totally different Tharpana Mantras. It fully differs from the usual Apasthamba Sutra. In this particular Tharpana, not only pithrus but also Sakhees means friends, Guru mean teacher and Acharya means Mentor’s Tharpanam is also conducted along with the forefathers or ancestors. Among the Iyer Bhramins, this sought of Mantras have much religious importance in life and one’s duty and responsibility.
