Attukal Bhagavathy Temple: Pongala, Purnima Aiswarya Pooja

Attukal Bhagavathy Temple is located in the town named Attukal in the district of Thiruvananthapuram in the state of Kerala. The principal deity of this temple is Attukal Bhagavathi.

The annual Attukal Pongala festival is the renowned and popular fair of this particular temple attended by over a million women participate from the nook and corner of Kerala and the neighboring state of Tamil Nadu. It is to be remembered that this temple is located just 2 km from the famous Sree Padmanabhaswamy Temple in heart of Thiruvananthapuram.

The main festival of this temple is Attukal Pongala. It is held in the month of Kumbham in and around this temple every year. A Millions of women gather and prepare Pongala. This special dish is prepared by cooking rice with jaggery, coconut and ghee plus other ingredients such as resins, cashew nuts, badam nuts etc. it is prepared in an open small earthen pot on order to please the Goddess Kannaki.

The other important festivals of this temple are with the annual Utsavam of Sabarimala, Mandala Vratham Festival is held in this temple. On all full moon (Pournami) days, Aiswarya Pooja is held. Pooja to the Lord Ganapathy is held on Vinayaka Chathurthi. In this temple, Vidyarambham, Saraswathy Pooja and Pooja Vaypu that is much identical to Dussera festival are held in this temple. On Sivarathri, Siva Pooja and Karthika Deepa on Karthika month are held in this temple. During the month of Karkadakam, Nirayum Puthariyum (Ramayana Parayanam) is also held for the devotees.
